I think the audience might have watched the movie over and over again because it had interesting characters and a good story line. Sound in this movie is an advantage because it makes it easier to make a more in depth plot. I think people in the day liked Chapaev because it has a little bit of everything in the movie, it has action, comedy, drama and a bit of romance. The characters are also very likable so that the audience is more attached to them.
A part of a movie that could not have been done so effectively was the scene where the Red Army squadron was all singing as a group, more like a family. While they were singing you could just see everyone was at peace and it showed Chapaev’s kind side. Some of the comedic parts of the movie could also not have been done in silence. For the joke to be amusing you not only rely on the actual words he says but you also rely on the tone of the actor’s voice. Also if a person does something stupid like bump their head, sounds makes it so much funnier. I think silence would make the plot of the story so much shorter and simpler. It is a lot harder to show parts of movies that don’t have a lot of animation in a silent film. A talkie film can have a lot more deeper meaningful scenes where they don’t need extra movement in the scene to keep the view entertained, rather the view is more entertained about what the character says. It also creates a build up into the more action packed parts of the film.
At first Chapaev hates having Furmanov around, as Chapaev feels that Furmanov doesn’t know anything and is just going to get in the way. After a while Chapaev realizes that Furmanov is a smart man and opens his mind to Furmanov’s ideas. They become friends and when Furmanov leaves he is saddened.
In this film I think there are a couple of the characters that are heroes. First obviously is Chapaev who is also the main character of the film. As the movie goes on I think Petka starts off in the movie as a not very intelligent especially on the battlefield. Towards the end he becomes a hero in the movie as he sends his love away once they are getting invaded but he stays behind and helps Chapaev battle it out. He also pulls Chapaev out of the battle, reluctantly, when is was apparent that they had lost and Chapaev had been injured. He also makes his final sacrifice when he stayed on the beach front giving his life to try and save his friend. The Reds were seen as the good guys noticeably in the scene where they give the peasants their animals and goods back when the Whites have previously robbed them of these.

I liked the point you made about the impact sound had on the scenes with Chapaev and his men singing. I didn't really pay attention to that as much until you pointed that out. The brotherly, peaceful side to the story could not have been portrayed as well without sound
